  1. Balto - a Pet Hero & True Story

This is a beautiful TRUE story about heroism and perseverance. In the cold Alaskan winter of 1925, an outbreak of diphtheria threatens the lives of numerous children in a small Alaskan village. Balto, a sled dog, embarks on a 600 mile treacherous journey across the dangerous Alaskan wilderness to bring medical supplies to the village in need. This movie teaches children that ANYBODY can be a hero and make a difference, since Balto himself was considered to be a below average sled dog. Oh my goodness - tears. This is a stunning movie for the entire family.

The Fox and the Hound is an emotional rollercoaster about the trials and tribulations of friendship. Tod’s mother is killed and this fantastic fox is taken in by Widow Tweed. He soon becomes best friends with Copper, a devoted hound and they become inseparable. Tragedy strikes as these friends realize they are enemies by nature, and they must overcome their natural instincts and deep-rooted differences in order to save their friendship. A must watch.

  1. All Dogs go to Heaven

Released in 1989 - the theme of this movie is still ever so applicable. All dogs go to Heaven is a tale about revenge; however the protagonist, Charlie, sacrifices his selfish needs and plans to rescue his friend Anne-Marie. A great lesson for children of selflessness, and the divine bond between man and dog.

  1. The Secret Life of Pets

This movie is one of my personal favourites - filled with loads of laughs and adventures. Starring a dog, another dog, a cat and a rebellious bunny - honestly what more could one want from a movie? Max who is a very pampered terrier loves his comfortable life in New York, until his owner adopts an uncontrollable and gigantic canine named Duke. A day that started out as a neighbourhood walkie, turns into chaos. The dogs meet a group of alley cats and bizarrely end off on a truck heading towards the pound. HOWEVER Snowball (we’ve all been waiting for the appearance of the rebellious bunny) saves the gang from an atrocious fate. Snowball merely asks that Max and Duke join him and his gang on a mission against those horrid humans who’ve done them wrong.

  1. Ratatouille

If you’re a devoted Foodie and love saying things like bon appetit and CROIssant, then you’ll ADORE this movie. Set in France, Remy the Rat aspires to be a chef. Needless to say rats aren’t considered to be the most sanitary of creatures in a gourmet kitchen, thus Remy struggles to actualize his dreams. On a random day, in a not so random sewer, Remy discovers he is underneath one of Paris’ finest restaurants and sets off on his journey to make his culinary dreams come true.

  1. Jock of the Bushveld (animated 2011)

Jock of the Bushveld is one of South Africa’s most famous stories - about a dog named Jock and his travels with his owner Sir Percy Fitzgerald in the late 1800’s. Jock of the Bushveld animation is loosely based on this legendary tale and is great for the whole family to enjoy.
